WHAKAPAPA KORERO – BACKGROUND
Te Hiringa Matua was established in 2017 as a pregnancy and parenting service to support hāpū māmā and parents of tamariki aged three years and under, who are experiencing multiple and complex challenges associated with alcohol and/or other drug use, and who are poorly connected to health and social services. The service aims to improve health and social outcomes for hāpū māmā and wider whanau, through early, whānau-centered, and coordinated support.
• Aligned with this, the objectives of Te Hiringa Matua are to:
• Increase access to, and equity of, health and social services for whānau.
• Increase choice and responsiveness in addressing the holistic needs of whānau, including housing stability, financial hardship and other social determinants of health.
• Reduce wait times and barriers to timely engagement with appropriate services.
To achieve this, Te Hiringa Matua Model of Care, prioritises Mātauranga Māori specific to Ngāti Porou and is underpinned by Mahi a Atua; an approach that utilises cultural constructs to reinterpret whānau distress e.g. wānanga and pūrākau.
Therapeutic interventions are informed by traditional Māori healing practices, including Rongoā Māori, Maramataka, Kapa Haka and Mahi Toi such as Mahi Raranga, Mahi Whakairo, Tukutuku and other creative art modalities.
It is expected that the person in this role will have, or be willing to develop, competence in the philosophy of Mahi a Atua and align their practice with the wider Model of Care
