Te Pae Oranga Panels work alongside adults 17 years or older who have come before the Police.
Te Pae Oranga Panels comprise of local community peers and pakeke/kaumatua who meet with the adult to formulate a plan that is focused on supporting change in behaviour and to reduce possible re-offending.
Te Pae Oranga is a way to deal with offending, it offers more than that.
It’s a way Police, Iwi/ Māori communities:
· Help people in trouble get their lives back ontrack
· Do right by people harmed by crime
· Hold people accountable without going tocourt.
Te Pae Oranga doesn’t just look at what happened , it also looks at why and what is going on in people's lives. That way we can help put things right understanding the challenges people are facing , and connect them to the right service and support.
The panel helps make a plan to put things right and help everyone who takes part.
Actions that are included in the plan as follows:
· Getting support to quite drugs and alcohol
· Getting a drivers licence
· Getting a job or Training
· Paying for damage caused (reparation)
· Hearing how victims were affected andapologising to them.
Te Pae Oranga has many benefits; it acts like a “jump start" to help people make positive changes in their lives .
