Ngāti Porou Oranga is proud to acknowledge the involvement of our rangatahi in Song Bird, a modern Māori folktale series developed through Rāngai — a Tairāwhiti-based, Māori-led screen arts initiative.
The pilot episode premiered on 26 March at the Odeon Theater in Gisborne , marking a significant milestone for the kaupapa and celebrating the creativity, dedication, and talent of young people from across the rohe.
Six years ago, Shannon Dowsing — a filmmaker who whakapapas to Ngāti Porou set out to create more than a single production — he envisioned a pathway for rangatahi to step into the world of screen arts with confidence and support.
That vision became Rāngai, a 100% Māori-owned screen arts school focused on providing accessible, hands-on learning opportunities in film and storytelling.
Through this kaupapa, rangatahi are empowered to explore creative careers while staying grounded in their identity, culture, and connection to home.
Ngāti Porou Oranga Rangatahi Services proudly supported rangatahi to engage in this programme, helping to create meaningful opportunities for participation in a professional screen production.
From behind-the-scenes roles to on-screen performances, rangatahi gained valuable, real-world experience across all aspects of production — building confidence, developing skills, and strengthening their connection to storytelling through a Māori lens.
The success of Song Bird highlights what is possible when rangatahi are supported with the right opportunities and environment to thrive.
This kaupapa reflects a future where our young people are not only participants, but leaders, creators, and storytellers — shaping narratives that reflect who they are and where they come from.
Ngāti Porou Oranga acknowledges all those involved in bringing Song Bird to life — from the rangatahi who stepped into new spaces, to the creatives, mentors, and whānau who supported them along the way.
