The Renaming of Te Puia Primary Birthing Unit to Te Puna Wai

A profound and meaningful transformation took place on 22 May 2025, as the Te Puia Primary Birthing Unit was officially renamed Te Puna Wai—a name steeped in cultural richness and spiritual depth.

Te Puna Wai, meaning "The Spring of Water," evoke sthe image of a natural, life-giving source—one that nourishes, heals, and renews. It is a name that speaks to the very foundation of birth and creation. Much like the geothermal springs of Te Puia, revered for generations for theirtherapeutic power, Te Puna Wai honors the sacred beginnings that takeplace within this space.

The renaming followed a special hui, gathering those closely connected to the birthing unit. In attendance were kaumātua Elder Te Reo, Hauora Director Sonya Smith, and GM Nāti Pēpi, Caroline Thompson. Although Cultural Advisor Eru Wharehinga was unable to attend in person, his guidance was carried into the kōrero, shaping the depth of the discussions. Grounded in tikanga and cultural understanding, the decision was unanimous: Te Puna Wai was the name that most authentically captured the spirit and purpose of the unit.

This is more than a change in title—it is a sacred affirmation of the cultural and spiritual significance of birth in Te Ao Māori. Birth is a journey of immense tapu, where pēpi arrive surrounded by wai (waters), embraced by whānau, connected to whenua, and bound by whakapapa. Te Puna Wai reflects this sacred pathway—honouring the place, the people, and the process of bringing new life into the world.

Looking forward, TePuna Wai remains firmly committed to its kaupapa Māori-led approach, offering a nurturing, culturally grounded environment where hapū māmā and their whānau are supported with care, aroha, and dignity. It is a place where the miracle of life is honoured, where generations connect, and where each birth is celebrated as part of a continuous, living whakapapa.

Te Puna Wai is more than a name—it is a symbol of renewal, hope, and the strength of community. It stands as a living reminder of the sacred journey of birth, and the shared responsibility we hold in nurturing the next generation.
