New After-Hours Healthcare for Tairāwhiti opens

Te Tairāwhiti and Gisborne communities can now access healthcare services during weekends and public holidays says Te Rōpū Matua Chair Rina Kerekere.

TĀTAI WHĀNAU Tairāwhiti After-Hours Healthcare is resourced with doctors and nurse practitioners. The first weekend clinic is on Saturday 3 May 2025, and is open from 9amuntil 5pm. The clinic will be open on weekends and also public holidays from 9am until 5pm.

“Whānau living in Te Tairāwhiti can make an appointment through the free 0800 phone number or visit the Puhi Kai Iti Community Health Centre in Huxley Road,” Mrs Kerekere says. “Anyone residing within te Tairāwhiti can use the After-Hours service, and you don’t have to be registered with Puhi Kai Iti Community Health Centre.”

TĀTAI WHĀNAU Tairāwhiti After-Hours Healthcare is delivered by Te Rōpū Matua, a partnership between Ngāti Porou Oranga, Te Kupenga Net Trust, Turanga Health, andTe Whare Hauora o Te Aitanga a Hauiti.

Ngati Porou Oranga through Te Rōpū Matua were awarded the Health New Zealand | TeWhatu Ora contract to provide After-Hours healthcare.

Mrs Kerekere says working together with Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora, local primary, and community healthcare providers will help to address long-standing healthcare disparities.

She says: “As a collective of Hauora Māori leaders in primary and community care, we are dedicated to creating long-term and sustainable healthcare solutions for everyone in our community. Our approach prioritises whānau-centred care, ensuring healthcare is accessible, equitable, and deeply aligned with the needs of our people.”
